Abstract

The article focuses on the structural and semantic interactions of deriving stems and derivational affixes, in
particular the laws of their combinability. Word-building valency is determined by comparing the derivative and
initial units in terms of their word-building and semantic structure. Word- building valency of verb stems with the
categorical meaning of active movement is determined by matching the semantic and word-building properties of
deriving and derived stems to set the valency links of a deriving stem with appropriate word-building affixes on
the semantic and formal (word-building) levels. The main structural element of the derivational paradigm is the
deriving word stem that reveals its ability to combine selectively with some derivational affixes which harmonize
with it structurally, semantically and grammatically. As a result of this word-building process, derivatives are
made in which the deriving stem realizes its inherent word-building valency. Affixes when combined with the
deriving stem form new words grammatically, enriching cognate derivatives with new semantic components
