Abstract

The article deals with the types of cross-gender travesty's motivation in the literature of western Europe and
Russia (from antiquity to romanticism). We came to the conclusion that visual change of gender for girl is
determined by self-sacrifice, love, desire of self-realization or service to God (in the hagiography). But for men it
is determined by desire of love adventures or to save his life.
