Abstract

The paper analyses the core of medical vocabulary, its terminology as far as the etymological aspect is
concerned. It describes the original sources of formation, semantic evolution and paradigmatic combinability of
the core medical vocabulary. Special attention is given to the role played by the elements of classical languages
in medical vocabulary both diachronically and synchronically. On the material of modern borrowings operating
in medical lexicon, we show that although Greek and Latin roots and morphemes should be regarded the core of
medical terminology in English, together with its own (Germanic material) and borrowed from Romanic
languages, UNDER CONDITIONS of information revolution terminological system continues the processes of
borrowings from modern languages together with borrowings of relevant concepts
