Abstract

The article analyses the main features of the conditional conjunction of dominant type (‘if’) in Middle English
texts. It also reveals the specific nature of the mechanism of marking the main clause and the conditional clause,
and presents five main grammatical forms which are semantic equivalents of ‘if’ in different languages, and their
correlation with Middle English conditional markers. The article defines the peculiarities of the location of ‘if’ on
the derivational tree.
