Abstract

The article offers theoretical overview of foreignization and domestication translation strategies in Ukraine
and abroad. The attention is paid to style- and meaning-generating functions of intertextual units in literary texts,
specifically to the fact that the reader of translation has not only to receive information but to interpret it,
actualizing numerous LIST OF REFERENCES to other sources. Application of foreignization and domestication
strategies while rendering intertextual units is critically analyzed. In the practice of translation foreignization
strategy is realized by means of word for word translation of intertextual units with the commentary provided. The
most essential shortcoming of such approach is the loss of the pleasure from recognizing the quote, transformation
of semantically rich part of the text into a neutral block, violation of esthetical entirety of the original text.
Domestication strategy is realized by means of adjusting translated texts to the semiotic universum of the recipient
culture, specifically with the help of replacing well-known intertextual units by a functional equivalent. However,
translation approaches can’t be rigidly fixed. They are determined in each individual case depending on the
situation, type of the text translated and the kind of the expected addressee of the translation.
