Abstract

The influence of Shevchenko’s poetry on Dovzhenko’s outlook and literary work is explored in this article. It
is proved that the writer’s historical motives in his literary works have something in common with his conception
of Ukraine in the past. There are revealed not only conceptual relationships but also many word matches. It is
determined that similar historical and philosophical views of both writers can be seen in the imaginative, poetic
and stylistic commonality of their literary heritage. Attention is paid to the fact that Shevchenko’s motives
permeate the movie-essay “Ukraïna v ohni” (Ukraine on Fire). The analysis involves movie-essays, stories,
dramas, scripts, essays, memoirs and biographical materials – artist’s diary notes of the years 1939-1956,
archival materials.
