Keywords:
language, nationality, equality of languages, local language, government languageAbstract
The complicated linguistic situation in the multinational Austrian-Hungarian monarchy is briefly analyzed.
The project of language law by Rus (Ukrainian) ambassadors at a meeting of the State Council in Vienna in 1909
with the help of which they tried to solve complex language disputes in Austria-Hungary is presented. The motives
of Rus (Ukrainian) ambassadors to resolve the language issue are described. The views of the then central
government onto the language problem in the country are cleared. The reluctance of some deputies of the State
Council to fair solve the issue of local languages functioning on the territory inhabited by different nationalities is
shown. It is revealed that the language question in the highest legislative body of the state was not solved despite
the good motives of Rus (Ukrainian) ambassadors.
