Serebrianska, I. Media Education: Semantic Specificity of the Term in the Value Coordinate System of Information Society

  • The article deals with semantic structure of the concept “media education” at the present stage of education field. The author has systematized its prevalent definitions, distinguished “media education” and “media literacy” and defined typical Ukrainian derived neologisms. Attention is paid to the related terms “media pedagogy”, “media didactics”, “media competence” and “media upbringing”. The differences in understanding of “media education” by foreign and domestic scientists are identified here. The semantic relationships of the concept “media education” with other spheres of public life such as education, pedagogy, media sphere, engineering, law, etc. are also outlined. The value orientations of media education in modern society are formulated.
    Basing on component analysis, the author concludes that media education is an institution of public education in the language public awareness and the term media education needs fixing in the lexicographical language practice.
